Planning And Adorning A Bedroom For A Teen

By Halina Funari

As your children start nearing adulthood, their pastimes and needs start to change dramatically. Once your child gets to their teens, they will have outgrown their room, so you need to carefully plan ahead. You have to be aware that your youngster will have their own opinions on what they want in their room so you should expect some compromises. We are going to look at some of the design and decorating choices for a teenager's bedroom.

The most important decision that needs to be made is to ensure the bedroom your child presently occupies is big enough for a teenager. If it is realistic to do, you may want to shift your teen to a larger room or extend the current room. The particular style of the bedroom may need to be discussed but painting the walls in a neutral color can be a good idea. Teens really love to put up all kinds of posters and images on their walls so a neutral tone allows that flexibility. Additionally, try to visualize any additional storage space that may be required for the various possessions and clothes that may accumulate.

Like a teenager, your son or daughter will be spending more time in the bedroom. Due to this, you may want to incorporate some pieces of furniture, like a small couch or reclining chair. You may want to increase illumination and maybe add bookshelf space if your teen will be doing a lot of reading and writing in their room. The drapes they had as a younger child may no longer be appropriate and so this also needs to be taken into account when thinking of the overall design and style of the bedroom.

In addition to leisure, the bedroom more and more becomes a place for studying and homework. A work desk can be a minimum requirement and with technology playing an increasing role in school work, you will have to think about things such as internet access throughout the house. You may need to add some extra electrical outlets for personal computers and desk lamps. The space results in being a place where a teenager wants to have their own space and at times privacy and not being disturbed will be important. Getting a more substantial bed for your teen is an pricey proposition but with planning, it can be done.

To ensure that your teenager will have the ideal years of their lives, you want to make sure that their bedroom is a place that they can call their home base.
