Cloning a Medical Marijuana Plant

By Jared Perkins

Cloning is a must have skill for anyone that is growing medical marijuana. Having a mother plant instead of seeds will do wonders for your turn around rate. Even though it sounds like science fiction, cloning is a fairly easy process. With a couple tips and some guidance from yours truly, you will have it down quicker than you think.

Since you are researching cloning you probably know the importance of the sex of the plant. If you don't know, let me save you some research. other than for cross breeding purposes male plants serve no purpose in marijuana cultivation and actually cause problems. You should buy feminized seeds to start out and avoid male plants all together. Only make clones from plants that you are sure are 100% female.

Preparation consists of some simple tasks and the acquisition of some very inexpensive materials. You will need a razor blade, rubbing alcohol or prep pad, clear plastic disposable cups, soil, water sprayer bottle, and either cloning powder or gel. All of this can be bought at Lowes for under $15. Make sure that you have an area set aside for the clone/clones with proper lighting set to 18 on 6 off cycle. You will need to be able to keep a close eye on your new clone so make sure that the area is easily accessible. Airflow is also important, like in all other stages of growth. The clone can stay pretty wet for stages in the process, some airflow will help you from developing deadly mold issues.

The final steps of preparation are to prepare the clone dome. Start by cutting drainage holes in the bottom of one of your newly acquired clear plastic disposable cups. Use your razor blade to cut 3 holes in the bottom of the cup as to allow water drainage. You will need something for the water to run off into. I suggest cutting the top off another cup and putting it underneath your properly draining cup. You will also need to cut the top rim off your cup with the drainage holes so another clear cup can properly fit on top as the dome. Once you have the top dome fitting snug on top of the drainage cup you are almost there.

The clone dome is ready for soil now. I don't stress the type of soil I use for this step. My only point of contention is any nutrient heavy soil for this stage. I do however like to prepare my soil in a specific way. Start by over saturating a cup full of soil with distilled water. Wait until it is all wet and then drain the water out. Now your soil is ready to provide many days of aided humidity to your clone dome and assist with root growth. The last thing I like to do is prepare a hole for the clone in the soil, and also add a pinch of cloning gel/powder. Just a habit.
